WHITE'S IDX
This is my firt post. Great Forum. I've been detecting for several years along the east coast.
Found 3 of these in my brother's front yard. He owns an old farm house (Ricmond, VA area). I think several other items we have found have been indian war era. One of them fell apart during cleaning (left the other ones alone). It has woven material in it. Not sure if it was discolored from the metal or it was dark blue/black to begin with. Any help would be great.

I think it is a grommet of sorts... I'm no expert. :-\

Welcome to treasurenet 1dirtyknee! When I detect I always end up with two dirty knees, an elbow, dirt on my forehead, etc... :D

Thanks PBK!. Looks like you nailed it. Not sure how long these have been in use. The ones I found were all at least 6 inches deep.
