I started my 1st coin roll two weeks ago on a Friday afternoon after work. I went to my local bank and asked for half dollars. They looked at me like I had lost my mind. So, I went to another bank across the street. They were friendly but acted like half dollars were no longer in circulation. I hit three more banks on our main strip and no body had half dollars or seemed willing to order a box. It was about 5:20 and most of the banks were still open, but I was feeling pretty discouraged after 5 strong rejections. So, I hit one more bank that was on my way home. I asked "Do you have any halves or Eisenhower dollars?" and they said, "We have a lot, how many do you want?" Of course, I said as many as you have. They gave me $280 in halves and $104 in Ikes. I was so excited and little did I know what I had: Two rolls were solid silver (20-1964's, and 20-1965-69's) plus there was another 40%er and then 11 Ben Franklins. I was still in shock when my 8 year old daughter said she found some weird ones: 4 Walking Liberties and 2 Barbers! Since it was my first hunt, I am afraid it is just downhill from here. Since then, I was skunked by my first box of halves, but did pick up a 1976 proof. Still working on getting some banks to order boxes of halves for me, but things are looking good. Still in shock...58 silver half dollars. What a great hobby.

very nice!!

Sounds like me... my very first try gave up 93 silver pieces... 23 90%ers and 70 40%ers...

I have been chasing a score like that ever since :)

I havent found any barbers yet, but wow 2 of them, that is amazing!!

Is your 76 proof silver, or clad?

Any silver in the ikes?

The proof was clad 1976S. So, not worth much but pretty. The Ikes were all clad. I imagine silver Ikes are hard to find. I have two banks who said they would get me $500 boxes this week. So, fingers crossed. How do you convince the bank to keep ordering them each week?

Welcome, Nice beginners luck. That's the way to find silver, by sticking to it no matter how many nos you get and then by buying them all. Good way to spend some quality time with your daughter, as long as the two of you are enjoying doing something together you'll never really be getting skunked at all. Maybe you might try getting a couple of the Whitman collection books and see if she likes working on making up sets. A basic JFK I have is only 35 coins to complete. Glad you made out and are off to a real good start, good luck, and HH.

Be nice and bring your 8 year old with you and your set.

That's a great idea. I have verbally mentioned the kids, but bringing them along is even better.

Exactly. Coin roll hunting is more than just acquiring silver. The time spent with the kids sifting through the coins has its own value. Thanks for the suggestion.

dont thank i would go to the same bank every week they might get mad and cut you off i would hop around every week for a month then go back to the first bank and start over

Yup, you have a kid ask for coins and the tellers will do all they can but watch out they don't just say the s-word. That is one reason that I have my Whitman's, so that I am a collector. I do like collecting everything now and have a book or two for each. Coin collecting is just a good hobby for kids, even cents, nickels, or dimes and while they build the sets you keep stacking the extra silver that they don't need, not yet anyway.

I go to certain banks to pickup the same day each week, whenever my boxes come in, and some I go to 3 or 4 times a week. I get boxes at a drive-up window where I cash my checks and sometimes I get 5-6 boxes of dimes and nickels a week. Another bank stocks boxes of coins, 2-3 halves, 2 each of dimes and nickels, to have for me whenever I want them. I just call so they can get them out of the 10 minute time lock vault. Been going to both for almost 2 years now besides the other 4 or 5 I use to pick up from. I bring them candy and always ride with my wife, they like her.

The s-word...I agree that the kid coin collecting angle is more likable than the middle aged silver stacking coin roller, but obviously they don't have to be mutually exclusive. You are very encouraging. Thanks again for the advice.

Congrats on a great score! Walkers and Barbers too? Wow! I've only found one Barber in the last 2 years of hunting. Nice work!

I was just meaning you don't want them saying, "do you have any silver ones or we want silver" just because it is better to keep as many of the tellers in the dark as possible. Any reason for getting coins is better than waking up or making a cherry picking teller.

I understand. The stories about tellers hoarding coins or slicing the sides of the rolls looking for silver is concerning. We definitely don't want to enlighten the unaware gate-keeper.

Great score! :icon_thumright:

To keep your order banks happy, pick up your boxes promptly after the courier delivers them to the bank. Many banks have limited vault space and boxes of halves take up some of that precious space. Don't let them sit any longer than absolutely necessary. Also, the banks biggest fear when ordering halves for a customer is that the customer will never pick them up and "stick" them with unwanted boxes of halves. Promptly picking up your ordered boxes will help alleviate this fear as well.

Wow
That certainly is a stellar beginning

The hook is in

Sweet score! I've never found anything that awesome in my time coin roll hunting! Definitely some good luck there. Also, us TNet members love seeing pictures :)

Here are the pictures. The barbers and walkers are pretty worn.
