I'm no rockhounds but my first thought was jasper.
Telling us where it was found might help to narrow it down to known geology.

Yup. Silica of some sort. Jasper sounds right to me.

Give it a good whack with a hammer. If it's jasper it will shatter. If it's jade, the hammer will bounce off leaving no damage at all. Jade is not incredibly hard, but it IS incredibly tough. Jasper is very hard but will break with a concoidal fracture fairly easily. Gary
