Most of us southerners have always celebrated the 19th of Jan.That's Robt E. Lee's birthday.Schools would be closed.I think it was a deliberate act when Congress voted to make the 19th of Jan a holiday for Martin Luther King. That way no one will really know who is celebrating what.Good move.

Yep, remember that in Louisiana public schools. I seems like Louisiana was the last one to make the change, if I remember right, sometime in the mid to late 1980's I think. However, the Governor of Louisiana still has the authority to proclaim that day a state holiday:

Proclaimed Holidays – LSA R.S. 1:55 B (2) and (3)
The governor may proclaim no more than two of the following as holidays: Robert E. Lee Day, Washington’s Birthday, Confederate Memorial Day, National Memorial Day, and Huey P. Long Day. (If only one is proclaimed, it must be National Memorial Day.)

Martin Luther King's birthday is celebrated on third Monday of January, not necessarily on the 19 as if falls this year.

Happens to be our youngest's birthday and she informed me of that coincidence as well. So we sit and watch Gettysburg and I have to inform her that was not necessarily the best representation of Lee. Instead we talk about the best military commanders of all time and how that often leads to Lee.

Of course being on the blue side of the line I remind her that Sherman was my favorite. Uncle Billy knew how to wage total war. As well given Grants willingness to pour bodies (attrition) into a fight until it was over the results were predictable.
