Hello Forum,

I found this 1940 S Jefferson Nickel, and after close inspection I noticed that the letter O in Monticello appears to be missing a portion of the letter. Is this an error coin? Thanks for looking!

I see what you are saying, but can't cast an opinion. All I know, is that I have never heard of that error on the Nickel. Maybe you can consult a coin book, or send PCGS or NGC an email and ask them ?

You never know a coin shop usually for free will look at it but most coins I see posted as error are not just damage. Good to ask and find a good coin shop to check stuff like that for you and a Red coin book is a must lots of good info on coins and errors to look for. Tommy

Cool! Hope it's worth a million$$ GL

Without a better pic, I would have to say that it likely took a hit. A better quality image may show evidence of a grease
filled die at the point in question, but I do not see it with what you provided.

Time for more coffee.

Nice find. Congrats. Hope it’s worth more the 5 cents.

Okay folks,

I let the nickel soak in olive oil overnight, and then washed with dish soap. Here are some better pictures. Now it appears my eyes were playing tricks on me. I guess I need to just get back out there . Thanks for looking!

So, just a lot of gunk. Still, 1940. Older than I am.
