This is a post that combines 4 hunts from this week. Sunday I went to a town park and spent 3.5 hours with my CZ21. I ended up with 74 coins with a face value of $5.48, a blank coal mine chit (it’s rare to find a blank one), a kids ring, a silver charm and a fake pearl earring.

Monday I went to an old church. I was told by my friend that an amusement park was located at the site before the church was built. When I got there I discovered that the only non paved ground was the hillside behind the church. It was fairly steep and so I wasn’t very hopeful but I was there so I gave it a shot. I spent 2 hours giving it a quick once over. I did find 10 coins with a face value of exactly $1, a pile of aluminum cans and lids and an old coin holder. One of the coins was a 1957 silver dime. The coin holder is plated brass with the initials MWH on one side and a design on the other. Unfortunately it was empty so no extra silver, it it is a cool find. It has a loop on the end so it could have been an oversized pendant or it could have been on a pocket or purse chain. It looks like things I remember seeing in the 1950s so its not real old.

It was raining so I left and headed for a local ball field to see if I could do any better. I spent another 2 hours swing the CZ21 as the rain ended. I found 51 coins with a face value of $4.68, a No Cash Value token with a dragon blowing a smoke ring, a worn out Saint Christopher medal, and a 1952D Wheatie.

Tuesday I went back to the scout camp. I decided to work around the swimming and boating area on the land this time. In 5.5 hours I found 105 coins (a low number for the camp) with a face value of $9.80, a 1981 jamboree neckerchief slide (ferrous metal back is shot), 4 more square brass nuts, an aluminum tag dates 1988, a plated copper cross, a stainless pocket knife, 1 aluminum tent rope adjuster and 97 big tent pegs.

8 of the tent pegs are what I call “big berthas”. They are over an inch in diameter and 12 to 14 inches long. They have a tapered end, a welded T top and have a manufacturer’s number stamped in the side. In the last 6 years I have found and returned over 8,700 tent pegs to the camp and only 5 of them have been “big bethas” (bb). To find 8 in a single location made this a special day. The camp opened in 1980 and they celebrated the 40th anniversary this year. The number on all the bb’s has included the number 81 so I think they were made in 1981. I have cleaned the ones I have found in the past and given them to the camp director as part of the camp history so they can be preserved. I will clean these up as well and add them to the display.

I also found 6 aluminum tent pole end pieces inserted into the end of an aluminum tent pole to keep the dirt and sand out. You don’t find these very often either. Again not rare or valuable, just not a normal find for the camp.

So I have been busy swingin my detector. Nothing great of fantastic, but gas money, a little silver and interesting stuff to keep me wondering what I will dig up next. Thanks for looking and may your coil lead you to good things.

I’m afraid a lot of the plating is gone and it doesn’t look like it will clean up very well. But it is still a nice and unusual find. Thanks and keep swingin.
