If I had dug it I'd probably think it was a part of a button. The outer shell, as the backing has disintegrated over time.

I agree with pepperj. Picture button front. I'm guessing turn of the 20th C. give or take a decade. Possibly based on "Der Trompeter von Säckingen" - which is a poem written in 1853 and later an opera performed on all the famous stages around the world in the late 1800's. I didn't find an exact match but if you do a Google image search on 'trumpeter button' you'll see other examples. Also was a popular motif on beer steins.??? :dontknow:
