Detector(s) used
GARRETT 350 GTA
Finally got my detector...first impression was that I couldn't believe something was actually in every hole I dug...no false signals. but here are my questions.

1) how do i pinpoint better so i dont have to dig too wide of holes
2) any way to better find items...pennies were very hard to see...but so were dimes and quarters...they tended to be tinted the same color as the dirt.
3) any tips on filling holes...the holes i filled seemed to never look good...i'm thinking of carrying a bucket of sand to help me smooth the holes over.
4) what is a good setting for depth and discrimination...i am looking for coins and jewelry

went for about 30 minutes and found 1 quarter, a dime, and 5 pennies...i was very picky about what i dug though...got alot of signals i didn't dig cause i couldn't pinpoint them

WHat kind of detector did you get? You never said.
I only know about the Ace 250 and the MXT.

You can swing a coil sideways (veritcal to the ground) and as it crosses the target it will beep if you do that in a x fashion you will get the center. But if your machine might have pinpointing on it if it does just the x pattern should give you center. The more you pratice and use it the more better you become

if you found 7 coins in 30 minutes I'd say you did great

DIDDO!

Your on the right track!! :)

His profile shows a GARRETT 350 GTA

Which I know nothing about so I'll keep quiet - but, your questions are basic and I know you'll get some great replies. :)

Welcome to TreasureNet and to the hobby! :) Keep posting!

# 3......get you an old pillowcase, 4x4 sheet of plastic...something of this nature. When you dig put your dirt on this. It keeps it from scattering on the ground. When your ready to cover your hole lift the material and pour the dirt back into the hole.
That is what I do.

#2....save up and buy a pinpointer. They are worth the price. good luck. :)

thanks..got some good ideas already...My major concerns are wasting time searching too big of a hole and leaving the ground messy.

A side not...I took my six year old. That made it soooo much more fun than it could have been. I only found 40 cents....but to him it was buried treasure. Finding the first penny was the most exciting part of his day.

Someone posted a great youtube vid on digging holes/plugs... try that section and see what you can find :) In most areas you can work and almost leave no trace, but I agree that sometimes the hole just is unforgivably terrible... :)

You can use a probe of some sort (I orignally used an ice pick) and carefully so as not to scratch the target push down till you locate it. Then, depending on the ground conditions I either cut a slit next to the target or slice and probe the ground with a screwdriver in as narrow a slit, pop the target out, step on the slit to seal it and generally it isn't noticeable at all. This works well for shallow targets, deep ones take a bit more effort including as mentioned above, saving the soil on a sheet of some sort to refill the hole. With practice, you'll develop a technique that is not too intrusive.

Pretty much what luvsdux said except I still use an ice pick while hunting clad. Old sites...I always dig a hole at least 6"-8" wide.
