Could that be copper on the stone?

Don't believe it has any copper.

Yeah, I think theres some kind of Cu in the green mineral. Not too many minerals make that color.

Sure could be turquoise as it's a copper aluminum mineral and you're in the right area.
Hardness 5-6. Looks like there might be some quartz inclusions.

It didn't set off the metal detector.

Yeah but didn't set off metal detector.

Theres a difference in being metallic and having a metal in a mineral compound.

Ok, so not setting off metal detector would be a poor gauge if it had a high copper content. I'm thinking the stone is chrysocolla.

Gold has a metal in a mineral compound and sets off detectors..no?

OK, gonna answer the question and then I'm done here.

Gold IS a metal. It will set off metal detectors if it is large enough.

My best advice is to get a good basic rock ID book and study the properties of the minerals in your area. What is also found with an unknown sample will help you id your specimen. A streak plate, some samples for hardness testing, and a scale that allows you to do specific gravity testing would help greatly. If you are stumped, take the sample, along with all the info you can muster to your local college geology dept and ask for their help. Also, at many rock/gem shows there will be a table of locals who will id stuff for free.
