I decided to try the Joey to see if it would give me a little less nulling. I sometimes think I am missing deep targets near Iron because I have trouble seperating them or are they nulling out with the Iron.
Not that I don't like the 10 Tornado I think it's an awesome coil. I was just curious and the advertisement says it rivals the stock tornado coil for depth.
Does anyone have experience on the Sovereign with the Joey Coil ?

I had one on an Explorer I had awhile ago and it worked real good but didnt match the stock Explorer coil thats for sure. I would say it matchted the 8" coil in depth. Its much lighter than the 10" Tornado which always makes for more enjoyable hunting.
If you want to cut down on your nulling and get a faster threshold response after a null make sure you keep your sens nice and low. At the beach I go no higher than 12oclock or 1oclock and in areas where there is more iron or trash I dont go above 3 oclock. It still gets real deep with those settings, especially with the 10" tornado coil.

here is how I have mine set up, nice and balanced and easy to read the meter

Re: Just ordered a new Joey coil for my Sovereign GT

I was just informed by the online dealer that the Joey coils were on backorder and it might be another 2 weeks before they would ship. So I op-ted to go with the sun-ray s-12 instead. I have been wanting to try one of these coils also for the extra depth. Has anyone got experience using one of these coils inland on parks and such. Do they become useless in mid to high trash areas?

Now that one will give you more depth and better coverage and feels about the same as the tornado coil. The S12 and WOT are probably the two most popular coils for the Sov, non minelab coils I mean.
Supposedly in trash a small coil is always better since its not seeing so much but some say a large coil offers a wrap around effect on a target and this can help as good or better in trashy areas. Best for you to try it out in your spots with both and see how you do with both the larger and smaller coils. So you know the smaller tornado coil is listed as an 8" coil but is actually 7 1/4" OD so its a pretty small coil that gets great depth. I have both large and small coils for my Sov and my Xterra 70 and mostly use the 10" Tornado on the Sov and the 10.5" on my Xterra. I havent even put the small 6" on my Xterra yet, the large coil seperates really well. If you dont like that S12 you can resell it rather quickly, they hold a high resale value and people always seem to be looking for them.

I have the Sov GT and a WOT, I have used it in playgrounds with multi-targets under the coil and learned for me I could work them by attacking them from different directions.

Can't say enough how great the Sov GT is combined with the WOT.......

i have the GT with S12 and its awsome on the beach! its lighter than the stock 10" i also have the S8 and S5 ,the S5 is much better to use in heavy trash to seperate good from trash.i use the S8 in the water as it is easy to pinpoint .iv been very happy with the Sun Ray coils. good huntin..DD

Re: Just ordered a new Joey coil for my Sovereign GT

I got sov gt last fall with 10 in coil lots of nulling in park had to run sens around 2:00 and 12:00 on beach
Got 12 in sunray just in time for snow what luck but i can run sens almost max on beach
and in jan thaw some grass same park ran sens 12:00 no problem cant wait till spring

Took me a while to learn to use the large coil but I bought the 15 inch WOT coil and after a few hunts, the light came on and I figured out what it was telling me. On my last relic hunt with it, I found some Civil War Minnie Balls, a couple of buttons, a V Nickel and some other items at rediculously deep depths. I even found an old trash with some old bottles at over 2 feet. I almost gave up on that signal and on my last effort to reach the target I hit an old Coke bottle! I left the dump there to come back with the proper tools to dig it up later. I did find that on coin size targets to include buttons, etc., the deep ones give what almost sounded like a false signal at first. I described it to someone as a nervous, jittery type tone. The thing about it was that it was consistent. When I did the Sovereign wiggle with the coil, just over the target, the meter reading was pretty steady reading where most coins and buttons do but the audio was that jittery sound. I was digging buttons and coins at 18 inches easy. Now I believe I probably left some good silver targets at about 6 to 8 inches because they probably sounded like surface coins that I had decided to ignore. I was just hunting the deep stuff that day. The 12 inch is probably going to be a great coil for you. Let us know how it works out.
