I was just about sold on the Ace 250 until I saw somebody mention the silver umax as an alternative. As soon as I saw the unit online and read the reviews here, I knew it would be a better unit for me. I don't like the feel of units that feel cheap, like the ace 250 appears to. The better built quality, more accessory options and lifetime warranty made it a no-brainer for the $40 difference in price.

Just wanted to thank everybody on here. It is the sharing of information and experiences that make sites like this a GREAT resource.

Good luck with the new machine.

You will not be dissapointed.

I was very pleased when I came home and found Saint UPS had been by while I was at work. It took all of about 2 minutes to assemble and the manual is easy to understand. I do have a concern though.

My first place using it was on my property. Back in the 40's this whole area was a marsh and am assuming they brought in a bunch of fill material so they could build houses here. The reason i say that is because I have found a TON of trash. Everything from foil, tin can lids, rusted steel and what looks like lead, not sure though.

My concern is that I dig up a piece of iron even though I have iron set to discriminate. I take the iron chunk, lay it on the ground and I still get a signal from it until my discrim is up to around pulltab or 1cent. The same goes for foil, I have to set the discrim all the way to max in order to not get a signal from foil. Not quite sure what, if anything, I am doing wrong here. I have tried changing my sensitivity all the way to 1 and up to MAX with the same results.

Apart from that, it works great! All the trash I have found has been anywhere from 2 - 6 inches deep and I got solid signals on each one. Now I just need to work on my pinpointing skills before I start chopping up a park.. :).

Oh and to TreasureTales, thanks for the information. I am curious though as my discrimination knob does not have a setting for gold. It has Min, Iron, Foil, 5 cent, Tab, 1 cent ZN(zinc?) and Max.

Hmm... wonder if I was still moving to fast. Having never used a detector before I am quite clueless.. :).

I just tried a nail here at my desk and when I moved slowly, I got a VERY slight chirp when the iron was set to discriminate. When I moved the nail quickly, I got a louder tone but not a full signal like I'd get in all metal mode. I might have to go hit the yard again just moving a bit slower this time..:).

Thanks for the info!!!

Well another hour or so and I learned a lot more! Slowing down my swing helped a LOT. The Discriminate works very well with the slower swing. I have to turn the dials just a needle width past the setting(iron for example) to discriminate that out but otherwise it works great!

I still need to work on my pinpointing for sure. My first few holes were HUGE(1+ foot across) and now my holes are down to about 6-8 inches across. I won't be hitting any parks yet(imagine the lunar looking surface after I got done!) but I can tell this is a very addictive hobby, must like gold prospecting is for me.

Thank you again!!!

There's alot of trash in the parks I hunt so I like to set the discrimnation just below zinc and I run the sensitivity around 9 , the silver pinpoints well once you get used to it. I never figured out the x'ing method so I like to circle the target slowly opening and closeing it to identfy the size of the target before I dig.

That is a GREAT machine and you cannot go wrong with it. It's easy to get frustrated in parks with thousands of signals. I would concentrate on "small" sounds. Like if you get very short smooth blips in all directions - it's usually something good.

Bottom line - a good target almost always gives a smooth "small" tone.
