I just bought my first detector and was I have some places to go searching but I'm not sure where to start. My brothers and I bought a house in Mo. That was originally built in 1851. Its on 4 acres and has an old small (20x25) barn on it with a loft. Where should I start? Front yard, back yard, by the barn? Do I stop my searching at the barn or do I do the whole 4 acres? I also found an old sanborn map that shows and ols train depot less than 1/4 mile from my house, the tracks border my property. The county fair grounds are also right there so I am a little overwelmed as to where to go first. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

My suggestion is get to know your detector before you venture out. Start in your own front yard. Experiment with different setting till you feel comfortable with the responces from your detector with the selected mode.

Be sure to read the manual a few times.

You can set up a test area and place various targets to read from. Penny, dime, quarter, gold ring, pull tab etc... See how your detector responds to the targets.

Do front of you house, back yard and sides of the house paying special attention to the areas next to the sidewalk and driveway. Any area the folks may have used to picnic or just longe around. The key is where peopole go, they lose things. The train depot would be a good place as well as the fair grounds. If it is private property, you will need to get permission. Don't want to have a run in with the law over a trespassing charge.

Other places to look would be city parks, count parks, swiming areas, picnic areas, camp grounds, churches, schools and any and all areas that large groups of people meet for whatever reason. Be sure to know your loal laws and get permission for private property.

Check with you neighbors and relatives to hunt their properties.

As you can see there are lots of places to hunt. Use your imagination and do some research for you local area to determine what hot spots might exist that are not apparent today. Old picnic grounds, locations of old schools or homes etc...

Happy Hunting

Ray gave you some good advice. I would pay special attention to those spots. But if you have only 4 acres, I would go over every square inch. No need to hurray.

I agree you can take your time and search all 4 acres. You may get some neat finds there. Keep us posted...Matt

Since time is not a factor I would grid off 1/4 acre at a time and go over the whole thing. If that grid turns up some nice finds I would do each grid twice before moving on. Good luck and hope to see some nice finds posted here. HH

no hurry; hunt it all.

Enjoy the hobby.

Sounds like you got some nice locations, which
is half the battle.

Hope we will be seeing some of your finds.

have a good un..

You have the perfect layout to learn use your detector. I would start at
a corner post. Now if you have a barb wire fence with old wood posts
be aware of possible " private banks" under posts that are not buried
very deep. Turn your detector to 'all metal' with a steady hum
(threshold) and sweep the coil like you would with a weedeater, low
to the ground and dig any solid signal.

I once took my Groundhog back to the Garrett factory on a Sunday
after having no luck with finding any coins. Mr. Garrett came outside
and proceded to scrub the coil over the parking lot. Lesson learned.

After working the perimeter you will have exposed lots of iron items
and learned what they sounded like in the ground. Try this: after
you pull another nail or horseshoe out put a silver dime in the hole
about 5'' deep and flat. Kick some dirt in and push down with your
foot. Now you know exactly where the dime is so you won't lose it.
Now slowly begin sweeping the coil toward the target and listen
carefully to the response you get.

Keep the setting at 'all-metal' though because some "banks" are inside
steel or iron 'vaults'.

After you get most of the junk out of the way the coins will be easier
to find. I suggest putting the junk pile in an area you have already
gone over thoroughly. Some of the junk is probably worth salvaging
at a later time.

If you find this exercize enjoyable you are now a THer.

Detect every bit of the land, and the depot and fairgrounds.
