I recently started panning and the area in which I pan has seen a drop in the river level, so much as that I can see black sand. Should I be panning where I see the sand?

Definitely pan the black sands, but black sand does not mean you will find gold in it, I live in the eastern U.P. and black sand is everywhere in every stream and even on the beaches yet there is no gold present of so few micro flakes it isnt even worth the time.
