Started the day dropping off some pennies and nickels at the bank's self serve coin counter. The total came to $82.22 and next to the teller's window was a small cardboard donation box, "Coins For Babies" or something like that, so I dropped in the 22¢, before checking the dates that is!

Then I went to hunt halves downtown and wouldn't you know it, I'm greeted by Uncle Ben in the first $200 I search. It was a 1954-S and my first Franklin from a slot this year. Felt like that was payback for the donation. Got three 40%ers too (65, 67x2) and my first 2007-D Roosie. Also found a 1987 Canadian dime in the bank's return tray that fills a hole in my dime book. Great day all around!

How does it work on these slots? Is this a half dollar machine and you put paper money in and then cash out getting half dollar coins? Please explain.

There is a casino near our country home and I may just give it a try. I don't know if there are half dollar machines there though.

You got it, I put in a C-note (sometimes 2) and hit "Cash Out" then I sit and sort. The silvers are easy to spot, and hear too. Then I cash 'em in for bills and the cycle starts all over... It usually takes me a couple of hours to search $1K.

The toughest part is someone a few machines down cashing out and hearing silver plopping into their trays. Arrgh!

How many silver coins do you think you average for each $200? I might just give this a try if this casino has half dollar machines. I'd probably end up at a poker, craps or blackjack table...something like that.....lol. There goes my cash......

Ever thought to ask them to buy those silver halves....maybe give them two of your clad halves for their 1 silver half? You would still be making a profit...just a thought.

When I started half hunting from slots last September the usual take from $1,000 was 8-12 40%ers and maybe a 90% now and then. This year the results are less, maybe 4-8 40%ers per $1,000 on average. I forgot to mention today's finds were from about $750.

I've thought of asking others for their buckets but I don't want to tip off anyone that what they've got is valuable. Don't need competish! I console myself that the casino has a rotating stock of halves and that given time other people's coins will eventually migrate back to the machines and into my cup.

I hope you find some half dollar machines, LJ. From what other's have been saying most casinos have gone coinless. And stay away from the tables! Before you know it you'll all your profit margin will be kaput.
