K

This is a Peppersauce bottle manufactured by G. W. Kearns in Zanesville, Ohio. Mr. Kearns was involved on several different glass companies in that city in the mid to late 1800s, and the "K" hallmark could have belonged to either of a couple of them, with a possible date range in the 1860's to the 1890's. Given the context and age of the other bottles found with it, the most likely date is the 1880's. This particular style of bottle had a long production life and was still available from the Kearns-Gorsuch Bottle Company until at least 1916. Here's an artist's rendering of their factory in 1916.

And here's what their bottle catalog was still showing for this bottle at the time:

Unfortunately it is impossible to know what label was affixed to the jar, so I don't know what brand of Peppersauce it held. I can tell you that Peppersauce was a very popular condiment back in the day, and remains so even now (though we probably call it Tobasco sauce).

And apparently it was pretty potent stuff, as there are numerous accounts of using it as a weapon, a fake poison, a substitute for whiskey, and various other things. Here's an account of one man loading up for battle, including two bottles of Peppersauce.

Finally, here's the before and after. Not very dramatic, and it didn't need more than soap and water, a brush, and a toothpick,

* Value on this one is a bit of a wild guess. I could only find one sold eBay listing, and it wasn't even on eBay, but on WorthPoint, and they want a high subscription fee to access their database, which I don't believe is justified. I found similar Peppersauce bottles that were in the $20 range so I went with that.

We've been waiting to see what you found out about that bottle.
It looked unique.

Very cool.

I know Zainesville. I remember it because that’s where this exotic animal keeper let his animals out into the town before he offed himself.

Good job again Robert.... What are ya gonna do when ya run out of bottles..? Well it won't be this month for sure...!
