Kiros32 & halfdime play "Let's Make a Deal;" one of them wins a Buick!
Back at our ghost town today, Kiros32 and I did a little of everything. While waiting for his arrival, I uncovered a partially frozen pile of dirt and did some sifting; just about the time Kiros32 arrived, all that was left was frozen. We'll finish that privy another time. We did a little experimenting with a privy probe I made yesterday, then decided to do a little actual detecting. My best signal yielded this Buick medallion, made by S.D. CHILDS & Co., Chicago. We finally decided to open up a new privy, one which has an unusual foundation. All it is/was was a rectangle of concrete, about 4-5 inches thick; no wonder it was sinking into the ground at an odd angle. All the other privies so far have a wall that goes all the way to the bottom. These privies are too small to have both men digging at once, so I suggested that Kiros32 check out an old foundation just a little way away from where we were. Shortly after he left, I found the clay marble for the day, not in our sifting screen but in the dirt I was digging. After a while, Kiros32 came back and I asked if he'd found anything good. He had, a small blue jar. I've noticed that Vapo-Rub and Noxzema both usually have their names on these types of jars; this one didn't. It just says Made In USA. As soon as Kiros32 announced it, I started to drool (a phenomenon he couldn't have overlooked).
I went back to the other privy to see if there had been any thawing; we had sun and temps in the forties today, so there should have been! It hadn't made much progress, so I covered the pile over with a tarp and headed back to the new privy. When I arrived, Kiros32 suggested a trade: his blue jar for what was behind door #3!
No, actually, his offer was the jar for the clay marble; naturally, I accepted
. He said there would be more glass to find if the leaves were raked back; it just so happens that I had a leaf rake on the premises and it sounded like good advice. After Kiros32 left, I wandered over to the site and began moving leaves. One of the nicer things I found was this little green beauty with a medicine dropper inside the lid! Knowing Kiros32's affinity for green glass, I'll offer it to him as the player to be named later in our earlier swap. My daughter likes the little white jars, so I managed to salvage four of them, along with two Presto glass canning liners.
Near the end of the day, I reached some drier dirt that should be siftable when we're able to get back over there.
