Self Study

See if you can get a copy of one of the books listed below. Most libraries do not have a copy, but you may be able to get one though inter-library loan. There are also video resourses out there too.

If starting out, buy some heat treated novaculite (pronounced something like no-vis-you-light) flakes or obsidian flakes. You can start pressure flaking small arrowpoints from the start and get to know the basics.

If you're anywhere near Newark, Ohio, check with Gary Hardy who runs a quarry selling flint ridge material. I may be able to set you up with a local knapper, if nothing else you can at least buy material from him. He sells heated flakes at $4 a pound.

Check online and you will find that there are knap-ins near most of you. They are abundant now and well worth your time to attend one of the events.

I have been knapping over 25 years. If you're a collector and interested in the educational aspect, I highly recommend that you try it. It's one of the most educational experiences that you can try.

Novaculite (pronounced just like it sounds, no-vack-you-light) is great material, I knapped a ton of it (ok, more than a ton).
