I dug this knife in Va. along with a 11th Pennsylvania Calvary 5 cent token, bullets, buttons, lots of horseshoes and other relics. It appears to be period. Its made of wood and iron. No brass. It was completely covered in rust before i cleaned it and soaked it in vinegar over the last few days. The wood handle is still partially there on one side. I assume it was originally on both sides but im not sure. I would love to identify it if anyone knows more about it.

That's a big honkin' knife to carry in your pocket... It does look like a period piece.

Just one blade? Is there anything distinctive about it?

Nothing really distinctive that I can tell other that I believe it only has one blade and it was a pretty good sized knife. I keep meaning to measure it but I would say when the knife is closed it measures about 5". The blade itself is around 4 1/2". I will get exact measurements. It looks like there could have been a button on the side with wood towards the top of the handle to unlock the blade but I cant be sure. Also If you look closely at the side with no wood you can see a small circle where a makers plate or something may have been.
