So I found this today at an 1830's fort. It is solid brass, and was very deep. At first I thought it was a drawer pull, until I saw the Reeded edge. Any ideas on what it is? Possibly the adjustment wheel from an old wood plane?

An adjustment nut....has a wide land at base providing an adjustable and repeatable friction point.

I had an old surveyors transit tripod that had knobs just like that on all the adjustments.
