Quite the stone axe

Used to fell trees? Imagine swinging and notching with that?!? How big of a native chestnut do you think that could work on? How big would they harvest?

There is no way these large axes were used to fell trees. Too heavy to swing in the manner you need to. This is an up and over your head tool made for splitting wood.

You can see by the tendons in your wrist that it's a heavy axe.

I think the axe weighs 12 lbs. I have noticed the weight and length numbers are usually similar in axes. It quite heavy!

An interesting style for sure.

Could you please post some close up images of the bit and the flutes?

Is this ax from the William Platter collection from which you purchased relics?

It is not from his collection but from my personal one prior. I’ll add photos when I get home.

You mean Ralls County?.. Great axe I would die if I found that lol
