Looks WWII. Looks like the front cap of a dummy bomb. Found a couple back in the 70's....middle section was made of wood.

Yes, a dummy practice bomb, WW2 era.

And yes, the bahamas has a lot of civil war history. Many confederate ships would dock in nassau after the blockade of southern ports. Blockade runners would try to sneak through with supplies. Union and confederate spies were all over nassau, new providence island. Union ships were not allowed in the bahamas due to england supporting the south. It was a safe haven for confederate sailors.

Personally....since it is of little monetary value....i would clean it up and use it as a paper weight! I enjoy seeing things I have dug and I am sure you will get many comments about it! Nice find BTW!

Actually, it is not a "dummy practice bomb." It is a World War 2 (and somewhat later) aircraft-dropped smokemarker for Search-&-Rescue operations. It was made with a wooden body for use over water. The body is wood so that it would float while releasing the smoke. A primary use was marking the position of downed pilots or a sunken ship's crew in the water, so that rescuers in other ships could find them. (The Search-plane finds the survivors in the ocean, and drops the smokemarker, whose tall smoke-cloud leads other ships to the survivors.)
