Large cent with strange marks

Found this large cent while detecting with strange marks on it. Anybody know what they mean or why somebody would do this? The obverse seems to have sunshine rays on the edges and the reverse has a big cross scratched in the back.

Honestly, someone years ago had too much time on their hands. It's simply damage with no way of knowing why.

Someone may have been trying to make a few cuts for change...back then a cent was worth WAY more than now....
