"E Pluribus Unum one dollar" The little ring on the top throws me, but with the two front legs and interior it looks very much like front half of a stamp roll holder or small coin bank.

It looks like it is part of a cast iron stove; perhaps part of a warmer plate trivet or cover plate.

After reading Johnny's post and judging the size by the OP's hand, it is too small for a cast iron stove cover. So after doing some research, this is what I found:

Well, that explains why I was confused about the lettering around the edge (not matching a Morgan dollar).
