I estimate I have about 500 mercs from over the years. My experience is that the merc is the most common silver coin you will find. I know this doesn’t seem logical though, if you think about it, they made that coin for twenty years, whereas the silver rosie didn’t run that long. Most of the mercs I have found are from the 40’s (about 80 percent). The Phily mint alone made almost a billion mercs in the early 40’s so there is tons of em out there. I have a coin book that I bought years ago thinking I would fill it with found mercs (Ya right!) I have all the forties and about half of the 30’s mints, the twenties and the teens get pretty slim though. I DO NOT HAVE 16 D, good thing though as I would probably have a cardiac. I think the rarest ones I have found is a 26d and a 29 D. There were a lot of mint years that only produced about a million!. I have found about 6 1916 mercs and quite of few teen mercs, though you will find that these are usually VERY worn with the mint marks worn from the backs! I always say that every old yard hides a merc somewhere. After a year or so of detecting I counted my coins and did the math and figured that I came up with one merc for about every 8 wheat pennys. 18 years later I find that figure is still about the same. Another funny thing about silver coins is that I used to put them in the paper folders and place the folders in the blue plastic boxes. I filed about 4 of these up then started throwing them in single cigar boxes. These things are the width of a silver dime and hold about 140 dimes. I’m only on my second box since doing this.
