Decided yesterday to really get down to business with this Cortes. Geared up and set him up took about 10 steps and it went haywire then took a crap on me lol. After reading all you fine folks' input,I've decided to buy a Vaquero with that 11x8 coil,I suppose I need to learn by ear instead of staring at a screen. Since I'm not the original owner of the Cortes I'll check to see how much to fix it,it'd be a heck of a paperweight.

Definitely not funny. I feel your pain. I considered purchasing a used machine, but the used Vaquero's on eBay were selling for over 300. Figured I would rather have the warranty. I have a new Vaquero on the way and can't wait to try it out. Best of luck with your new machine!

The Vaq is a great detector - hopefully the Cortes is worth salvaging.
