Lawton's Hill Pottsville, Schuylkill County
all I have so far
The building was subsequently used for hospital purposes
during the Civil War, to house the sick soldiers from the encampment
of U. S. forces, on Lawton's Hill and West Mahantongo
Street. Henry Russel, Esq., remodeled it into a handsome
residence and at this writing it is still in possession of the
family.
You'll know why it's called MARY's VIEW when you get there
and look behind you!
This is Known as LAWTON's HILL and can be seen from almost all of the City of POTTSVILLE.
Back in the 1930's-1950's Schuylkil County had a pretty prominant Klu Klux Klan following and what a better place to have meetings and cross burnings than high up on Lawton's Hill in the county seat!
The local Catholic's bought the land and chased out the KLAN and erected a Catholic High school in this place with a 50ft Lighted amber cross. In 1955.
Back in the 60's-70's this schools gym was home to Sunday night dances with live local bands!
The school has State champion Girls Softball, volleyball & basketball teams the last 15 years!

Don't Know if anyone here is Familiar enough with the area to Pinpoint
