I had an appointment back in the Raleigh area earlier this week, so I was able to spend about six hours out detecting at one of my old spots. I have hunted this property for over 5 years and have found quite a bit of CW relics there. I was hoping to dig some CW bullets, but it was not to be. :dontknow:
The finds this time were slim, but I was able to recover some old buttons in a small area of saplings where I have dug many in the past. Not one button had a shank on it. ??? The soil was wet and sandy where I dug these, and the holes would actually backfill with water when I dug them.

My finds were:

*A 34mm late 1700's Dandy button with a bit of gold gilt and a circular design of dots on the front.

*A 25mm “Standard Colour” button. (England)

*A 19mm “Best Strong – Stand.” (England ?)

*Two other flat buttons with no visible (crusty) back marks.

*Lead William’s Cleaner base

*Two iron whats-its? The larger iron piece looks like it once had a screw hole area at each end. Any ideas? Rifle piece?

Nothing too fantastic, but the Dandy was a nice surprise.

Thanks for looking,
MM

Nice finds!
That's a nifty measuring tool!

The button are pretty cool. That is a really nice measuring tool.

Nice finds MM. I know you wanted a CW relic & you did get a Williams Cleaner insert. Like the buttons. WTG, Q.

Can you imagine how bright and flashy the person wearing that big dandy must have been? He was probably the most interesting colonist! Congrats on your finds. I probably would have tossed that cleaner base as a nail head, lol.

Nice finds and I have to also agree, nifty measuring tool:thumbsup:

Thanks for the replies guys and gals. I bought that digital measuring tool (calipers) years ago for about $20 at Harbor Freight. I had decided I wanted to ID and label some of my better buttons (and coins), so I bought three button books to help ID them, and some coin holders to store them in. I like to be able to go back and look at them some times and be able to see where and when I dug them at.

LMAO!!! That's all we need is a Colonial Dman. :laughing7: I think I would have pulled those dandy buttons off myself if I had a coat with them on, just so I didn't stick out like a target. :tongue3:
Thanks for the laugh buddy,

Leadless and Shankless, but still a Yankee Doodle Dandy

Whewwwww ........ There for a minute I thought this was going to be about our fearless leader .. I am relived to see that it's about some great relics instead.

Nice saves!

Thanks Richard. I'm no Quindy, but I'm a lot younger and have many years to catch up. :tongue3:
Glad I could help out on your displays. I love creating them.

D, I think the bottom iron piece came off of a knife. Is it flat on the back?

Way to go on finding all of those buttons. As far as the big one is concerned, I think any person who had a coat full of those big honkers would have invented the first bullet proof coat! Actually I thought it was a Whizzer at first.

:)

Love that Dandy button MM. Not a bad day out buddy. Buried in snow here in Maine. I'm so sick of looking at my old finds

You're still the man Doug! I just stopped by that spot on the way home from work. I saw a couple vehicles parked out front so stopped to investigate. Turned out to be fellas from the hunt club target practicing. The buttons look great, I love finding those. Glenn

I remember that place! Great memories, right there. LOVE those buttons! I'd say ya did good! AND you did good at the Salvation Army today too. What a score! We need to hunt together again soon. I miss you all. :)

LMAO. Bullet proof coat. :laughing7: Good one Breezie.
Yepper, that piece IS flat on the backside. I think you may have nailed it. It would be the correct size. In the past I had found a CW rifle lock plate, rifle butt plate, wedding bands, Boreman cannonball frags, etc. in that same area. Part of a knife would make perfect sense since troops were there for a short time.
Thanks,
Doug
