This past New Year's Eve I was searching for halves and almost every bank had a box on hand. I was like a kid in a candy shop buying tons of machine rolls and finally asked one teller why they had a box on hand. She told me it was tradition to tape half dollars to your window sills on New Year's Eve for good luck and prosperity in the coming year so they always have a box or two on hand around New Year's. I think that is why we all have found so many halves with tape marks on them, especially old silver ones!!!

Interesting!!

That is some pretty cool information. This is one of those random facts they put in those toilet reader books.

Awesome!,

I've heard the superstition in some Europe countries throwing money over the threshold of a house and walking across it will bring financial good luck. Never heard that one about money taped to the window sill.

BTW, I read lots of Bathroom reader books. They are great.

That is extremely interesting, makes you wonder what other weird little coin customs are out there. Growing up I was always told that when you buy a new car, your supposed Dt throw some change on the floor and never pick it up. Supposedly its like good luck and protection on the road.

Putting a silver coin on a window sill facing every direction (north, south, east and west) is a tradition my family has always done. We put it out on New Year's Eve and take it out some time on New Year's Day so that it will bring good luck in the new year. We are Lithuanian and from what I understand it is a common practice throughout Europe. -Garbageman

People who tape half dollars to their windows end up with broken windows where I circulate. :o
