I found this buried in the sand on Cape Cod several years ago. It is apparently for a light bulb but there is no place evident for wires. It is brass and obviously quite old. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas about what it could have come from?

yup, the wires would have come out of the top and probably have been braided into a chain to hang the fixture. It would have looked something like this...
