carry on this metaphor, we may justly say that logic does supply
us with the steps, whereby we may go down to reach the water.

Think it's "The truth layeth at the bottom of the well"

and that makes it sound more like a case in point than a metaphor.

Perhaps someone was selling a land parcel and had promised active wells.

If it's "truth lies in a well" then "lies" has to be defined, correct?

If water in the well is the truth, what lies can it reveal?

If the well itself contains the truth, as indicated, then perhaps the water is the lie?

If the well is dry does the truth still lay within it?
