Detector(s) used
I’ve used about all modern ones but right now: CTX 3030, White’s MXT Pro, XP Deus, AT Pro, Xterra 505, White’s TRX
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
I hunted hard yesterday on some prime spots. We were able to detect a 1852 house that was turned into a museum and also a piece of property where a Union camp had once stood. The museum director told us that two Union sword guards were found just up from the house before it was paved over.

Being that I was a guest, I usually don't get real aggressive with my hunting. Instead I took my time and searched obscure areas such as the side of the house or out in the open. Needless to say, my hunting partner found 3 Mercury dimes fairly quickly along the walkways. We then crossed over to the museum. I didn't hear hardly any signals and the only thing I found along the front were two newer wheat cents and the clasp of a pocket change purse, probably 20-30s era. I gave that to the museum along with a CW bullet I had found on another hunt down the road from the house. In talking with the director later on, I learned that the museum grounds had all been hunted hard before.

I was happy for my friend, especially since this is only his fifth silver coin and all of them have been found with me, but after only finding 7 wheat cents and no silver I felt frustrated. So frustrated that I decided to go and detect this 1920s house in my town that is owned by the bank and abandoned.

When I got there, it was a matter of principal and not getting caught trespassing, so instead I searched this tiny sidewalk area easement on the side of the house, which is only about 2 foot wide and 25 feet long. I got this tight little signal and found this silver Rosy. It was only making sound in one direction with the coil and I was swinging the coil barely an inch. I barely made silver only being a 64, but it was a sight for sore eyes, seeing that shiny, little reeded edge come out of the ground. What is interesting is that I had searched this tiny easement 2-3 times before and my friend hit it with his machine. I think my success is that the last few hunts I have been working a lot slower and going strictly off sounds (not reading the VDI) and this has caused me to find more coins and silver (plus more rusty nails). This makes it silver #10 for me this year and all but 3 were found in areas I had detected before.

Congrats on the rosie. Great to get out this time of the year.

I too try to hunt by the sound, not trusting totally on the vdi but still checking it before I actually dig to have an idea of what it thinks it is. congrats on the dime. I seem to be having better luck right now on gold than the silver but that can change at any moment. I get excited when someone else finds something too and happy for them but still, one likes to find stuff too.

This Winter has been kind to us so far. I realize that it isn't so for folks up north and east. I hope I'm not speaking too soon.

I realize that I sometimes get spoiled and I have to go back to my roots, which is a sound only machine. The best discriminator is the natural one between your ears!

I love it when others find things especially when they don't do it often or just starting out, but 3 good looking Mercury dimes was almost too much for me yesterday!

Hello "Pointman",

Nice find! I do (much of the time) what you did today - remove the visual (VDI, graphs, smartfind windows...etc.) sense and detect with only my ears. It is hard not to sneak a peek, but the ear training is worth the trouble. I think it easier to get into a "comfortable zone" when using the audio approach - less distracting.

Happy Hunting in 2015!

Regards,

You did good! Any Rosie is a good day! I know your frustration at finding numerous wheaties and no silver, been there, done that.

Hey, John.......Nice silver #10 for the year.....keep us posted on future finds.....Good Luck.

Congrats nice Rosie! Good point.
I need to go back to just listening to the detector and moving slower and not looking at the screen, I know there's more out there that I'm missing.

I agree. Most of the coins have not been very deep and I am using a CTX which isn't too shabby at finding them. I found a 1957 quarter last week. At first I dug past it, re-swung and it was a couple of inches over and only 3 inches deep. I was looking at a shiny eagle and couldn't believe it. The only thing I figured i had missed it before (it was next to a sidewalk edge, that I know I swung over in the past) was because in the hole next to it, there was a piece of aluminum and a nail at 6 inches. I'm still head scratching on how in the world I could miss a silver quarter--silver dime is one thing or a wheat penny.

I can confirm that it is not kind up in the North East, were are getting at least 10" a week average for the past 4 weeks, 15" today, 25" on a storm two weeks ago 10" last week's snow storm, some more snow during the week too. I'm in NH so it is pretty bad, though MASS is worse.

Also, Nice silver, I have not found a silver coin in almost two years!! Though I have found some copper. Luckily I found silver buckle last year.

Coinman123,

You're finding that lonely lil dime in a place that had been hit before, even by yourself, is proof. I've always said that the main reason we find something in those places still, is because of experience. Sure, some of it is the changing environmental variables. But, each time we hunt we learn our machine a little better.

I also love having someone tell me "it's been hunted before". Can't tell you how many times I've gone into such a situation and the very first few targets I dig are clear nickle type signals. Tells me that whomever hunted before was only skimming. I usually do quite well in such places. :)

Sweet silver !

Congrats on the Rosie and your #10. HH

I know what you mean. I'll admit, I like finding silver in other people's footsteps. The museum was hit hard in the past and I still found two wheat pennies in front of the walkway. I got two more hits under the brick sidewalk, but I didn't want to pull it up. I asked the museum director and he told me the walkway had been there at least 80 years that he knows of.
