Looking for opinions on Clovis

Looking for opinions on this Clovis. This was gifted to me by my good friends uncle. It was found by HIS (my friends uncle) friend in the mid 80s in Jasper County Indiana. I’m not too familiar with northern materiel. To me it feels authentic. The base and edges are heavily ground. My friends uncle has no reason to lie at all, but I’m not sure about his buddy that originally found it. I guess I’m having slight doubts on its authenticity. Want to make sure it’s the real deal before I throw it in a case. Thanks.

I could be flintridge. I dont think its burlington. How does it look under magnification?

I have a number of clovis from Indiana. My favorite is an attica chert Indiana green clovis I found in the 90's.

I haven’t washed it at all. He said it’s been laying in his dresser for 30 years. I appreciate the insight in materiel type. I’ll be at the Bainbridge Ga show on February 4th. Maybe I can get it papered there. Thanks

Looks good except for that very thing. Who has a point like that but has never once washed it? I know everybody has their thing, but I'm going to wash a point, especially a good one. For that much dirt to still be on it after that many years would be a red flag to me. I guess I'm just too suspicious by nature, but dirt held in place by some type of fixative wouldn't surprise me. I hope that I'm wrong. Just my one penny opinion.

If the patina and mineralization are authentic, a wash would not affect the patina and mineralization.

If the patina and mineralization are not authentic, warm to hot water would likely remove it. Test a small area first.

Some sorts of artificially applied patina, caliche and mineralization are not affected by water. So, it's not a 100% test to determine authenticity. But it's a good start.

A bud in Anderson Indiana I hunt with bought a southern style clovis from a guy in the country when he asked about hunting a field. It was the only relic the guy owned, and it really looked good to me, even under my loupe. However, I did see under the loop the caliche had a very small area under one section, which when lightly scraped with my nail, popped off. I used a quick spit test and wipe on my tshirt to check some of the area and that did not wipe any off.

Then look for any copper area on the surface with a good powerful loupe with a light. 20 or 30 power should do it. These may not be visible to the naked eye and appear to be a very small flake or streak under magnification.

My grandpa gave me his points which he never washed, I don’t see a lot of issue with a dirty point, some people may just have a passing curiosity and not appreciate “pointy rocks” as my brother calls them… it’s a little dumbfounding to me when I show some people a find and they are like “it’s a rock… anyway”…. different strokes for different folks I guess.

Very nice great material. I have many in my drawer case I never washed. If they are washed they were found by water. But I do not frame anything anyway. Thanks for sharing.

Like I said, washing a point is my thing, and to each their own, but before I would plunk money down on a point, I would at least check, and with solvents other than just warm, soapy water. Nothing to lose in checking.

Only since you asked, something looks off to me. But I'd be happy to be wrong.

I'm not a fan of the patina, it reminds me of thicker/waxy stains rubbed into creases on old replicas. (Shoe polish, old motor oil, etc.) Under a loupe those old techniques often looks smooth (paint like.)

And the flaking, there are more abrupt flake terminations than I'm used to seeing. Maybe the patina is just highlighting them, but it something I see on modern replicas more than on old points.

I agree with Joshua, something about that patina doesn't look right, has that weird all-over graying that fakes have and too black in some areas and then there are areas of fingernail flakes that don't have any "deposits".

Beautiful point, but I’m very suspect on the patina, looking at points I have that I know were found, very few have dirt in those hinges, or if they do not all! $50 seems about right.
