I dug this on an encampment site. I think this is not going to be Civil War related, but I’d like to know the caliber. I think it’s an early 30.06 caliber, but not sure.

Thanks for the help!!!!

Is it jacketed or is it just lead?If it's just lead it can't be a .30-06

Jay, you need to get accurate measurements to know the caliber.

There are over four dozen .30 caliber rifle cartridges produced in the USA over the years. It would be tough to pin it to a .30-06 . . . even if it measured to 0.308"

Have fun cleaning that barrel after shooting lead bullets out of a high velocity rifle:laughing7:

Shooting any cast bullet can cause leading. Sizing the bullet and using the right amount of powder and other procedures can eliminate leading. [note the bullet in the pic is sized .311 and not .308] A good place to get info about this subject is Cast Boolits

You'll have a little more than leading shooting lead bullets at high velocity.Jacketed bullets are jacketed for a reason.A lead bullets will not grip the rifling at high velocity speeds.
