Came across this story on a Canadian gold mining site.
Gold was discovered in an area of northwestern British Columbia about 60 kilometers northeast of Juneau , Alaska in 1929. The Polaris Taku mine was built in 1937. It was closed down due to World War II and then restarted in 1946. In 1951 a barge loaded with gold concentrate sank off the coast of British Columbia in a storm. As a result, the mine closed.
