Today was the first day of school for us; I celebrated by having two old fillings removed and new silver put back in its place. Okay, now that the silver part of the story is out of the way...
. I went to an old house that dates to about 1817, I believe; I had gotten permission and done some searching about two years ago and received renewed permission a week or two ago to continue. I found a huge old lock there (and posted it here) and hoped that this old house would yield some oldies. My first signal was the 1953D wheat penny in the picture; it was the oldest coin I'd find today
. There was lots of modern coinage, but who wants that around a house that's nearly 200 years old!? Anyway, the day wasn't without its interesting finds. You might recognize the front of a vintage VW Beetle; I found four other parts to the same car. I think this one met its match with a Lawnboy! The second interesting find was just over half of a huge crotal bell; I really wish the other half had been there, too. Finally, this Tootsietoy truck, probably from the '50's; the paint is still in pretty good shape for its age and depth. I wonder what ever happened to the trailer.
This house is part of a horse farm, and there are other old structures on the property where I'll probably have better luck; Miss halfdime takes her horse riding lessons there and I've spotted some intriguing sites on the trail! I also have an aerial view from 1938 to work with, so I'm planning on a return trip tomorrow. Happily, it's two miles or less from home!
Making the day complete, one of the local papers this morning had an article about my pursuit of buried treasure. Hopefully, that will lead to some good leads!
