Lots of Wheats

Hello everyone, last week I bought this bag and box of cents that are filled with wheats. I am currently going through them, and it will probably take a while to finish sorting it, but I’ll go ahead and post it so everyone can see the progress.

I am not done yet, it will probably be a couple weeks before I finish completely. They are however 99.9% 1950s, and the oldest so far is a 1930. I estimate that the bag has about 4000 wheats and that the box has about 1000. I am hoping for 5000 wheats with my fingers crossed. If so, it would blow last year's total of 1500 out of the water in one day. So far the good ones that I have found are 5 1954s and 1 1955-S as well as a 1962 proof.

Just curious, how can you know that a coin is a "proof" coin coming out of a box ?

On the ones 1968 and newer there is an S mintmark, but on the older issues, you have to look at the details like a wide, flat edge and extremely mirrored surfaces like the one that I found. I’ll include an image for consideration.

I thought a "proof" coin was uncirculated and a mint issue in a protective case ? and that once out of the case it would no longer qualify as a "proof" coin... ? Maybe I'm wrong.. There are a lot of scratches on that penny.

Proof is not a grade, but a minting process. Once a proof, always a proof. When they are put into circulation, they become an impaired proof - one with circulation damage. That 1962 cent is definitely a proof.

Yes, indeed. And I frequently laugh at myself for not having learned it earlier. More often, I chortle for having forgotten something learned a long time ago.

Slow progress: 1600 counted out from the bag.

2000 counted out from the bag. It has now lasses my total wheatie count from last year.

Alright, last night I finished counting out the wheats from the bag, and they totaled a whopping 3935 wheaties! Also there was one 1962 proof, a 1966 Canadian, and a 1974-S business strike. The bag’s count was spot on too, with exactly 5000 cents.

It gets even better! I started on the box, and found these gems! 1891 IHC and 1951-D with clip at 7 or 8 o’clock.

I finished the box with 1143 wheats and one IHC. This makes a total of 1 IHC and 5078 wheats in the $75 dollars.
