lower back pain on beach

I suffer from lower back pain. It occurs when I use my long handle scoop. I use the Noc 600. It does not cause me any discomfort. Digging and lifting the scoop on the beach has really reduced the amount of digging time. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You could try a small hand held sand scoop. They are light weight & very affordable. But you will have to do more bending over to dig and that can be an issue if you have back pain. I also have a Raptor pull handle attach to my shaft and that helps me out alot.

I've had lower back pain for years. And it's gradually gotten worse over the years as well. There are as many remedies as there are people. But other than visiting a doctor you can try exercises for your lower back. Do a Google search and you will find many exercises for lower back pain. I do Yoga and some other exercises as well for my back.

If it gets worse instead of better, your best bet is a visit to your Doctor.

Can't take aspirin, ibuprophen doesn't help

I find that long handled scoop totally hurts my back. I use a short hand held one, more bending, but for some reason does not bother my back. I have good knees

You might ask your doctor about a prescription of aspirin and codeine; realizing that codeine can stop the pain but is also an opioid (narcotic, and can become addictive).

You hunt in the water or on beach? I'm good for maybe a hour when I hunt shallow water but being out deep where my body is supported.. Waist to chest deep.. I feel no strains and can go for 4 hours with no after affects.

Like above someone mentioned lifting with your knees, not your back, and use both hands on the scoop. So if your knees are OK, squat down, grip the scoop with two hands, and lift with your knees. Take glucosamine/chondroitin supplements. I never believed they would work and it took about two weeks but there is an improvement. Every injury is different YMMV.

And also like above, exercise will help. Strangely, for the back, it may help to strengthen core, crunches if it is safe to do so.

Maybe a different way to use the scoop? Is this in the dry sand or wet? Which scoop are you using? Wooden or carbon fiber handle? How are you doing it now? Lifting heavy scoopfuls? Do you have an assist handle on it? Maybe a photo of what you're using now will help us make a suggestion as to making it bit easier on your back. Without knowing why your back is getting sore (muscular, spinal, inflammation, etc) it's hard to recommend a drug or therapy.
