In much need of relief from the horror that has been the month of December, I decided to take my daughter Izzy out to the old park here in town - with the mighty "Burrito"
. There is a section in the far corner of this park that was once part of an 1800s homestead. A while back I dug an old (late 1800s) brass button and an 1899 "V" nickel from this site. On our way across the field, I dug an old style key but not old at all (see pic). Probably someone's diary key or something...
. Also picked off this little, silver-ish cowboy hat. At first I thought it was Modern Miners, but then I realized this might be too big...
. I believe it's just cheapo die cast "crappe" metal. There's a stamp on the back that says, "Ultra Craft". Almost looks like pewter the way it's "stamped" in the metal, but it just doesn't have the same look/feel of pewter. Anyway, I handed my machine to Izzy to hold for a moment while I cleaned off the pinpointer, and she just starts swingin' away. The next thing I know, the mighty Burrito gave off a solid signal - no chop, just a solid, short ping. Dug a nice plug and at about 7 inches, I pulled out this little ring. It was almost completely flattened and a dark shade of N.C. "mud red". Curiosity got the better of me (and Iz
) when we got home - I knew it was old but I had to clean it up. At first I just rinsed the majority of mud away and attempted to bring it back to it's original shape (ring-wise). Started to see a little bit of gold color shining through the harder I scrubbed. To make a long story short, I really "went to town" cleaning this thing off. Totally should not have used what I did ("0000" steel wool), but I could care less right now - the end result is shown in the pics. It definitely looks old - if you look closely, you can make out some detail (small stars on the side and some angled lines on the band) and there is either a "c" or a "5" stamped on the inside of the band. Curious to know if it is in fact gold - I'll have it tested on Friday. Anyone have any idea on what could be the approximate age of a piece like this - it would be appreciated.
Thanks for stopping by and keep on swingin' in the new year...
