✅ SOLVED "M" Buckle found at a civil war site.

I found this at a known civil war battle location. It looks old but not old enough I don't think. It measures 1.1"x1.6" and seems to have a lead back. You can just barely make out the letter M on the front.





Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

I think it is just a personalized/monogrammed civilian rosette.

It may be but the location would say no. It was found on a battle site in very steep terrain. Not likely a civilian location.

Maybe not, but that isn't a "war issue" rosette.

It may have been helpful to post the top down picture so that it would be more clear that the rosette is shaped like an oval. I have done this for you:



I've stared at it for a while, and honestly, I can't seem to figure out how the "M" you described is anything more than the happenstance pattern of oxidation/deterioration on the surface of the piece. I am not a rosette expert, but the only aesthetic design element I see is the edge/border. Otherwise, I would guess that it is pretty much plain.

This is a page out of a Saddlery Hardware catalog from the turn of the century.

Although your rosette may not be military issue does not mean that it wasn't used during that time.
Many many civilian use items were used during the war.

This is what I'm thinking. The likelihood of a civilian horse, especially one with this type of rosette, being on this hill seems very unlikely. The mountain is very unforgiving and steep and this relic was found on the steepest part along with other artifacts. Maybe someday I will be able to link this piece with someone or some group that was at this site. Either way I'm proud to have found it. Looking at your pic it is found second row from the bottom farthest to the right. Anyone have an idea how the M was monogrammed on to it? I'm going to take some better pictures this afternoon that will hopefully show it. Thanks for everyone's help.

The likelihood of a civilian horse, especially one with this type of rosette, being on this hill seems very unlikely.

Unless you consider the fact that many Confederate cavalrymen brought there own horses and equipment into the war - especially early in the war as the south had no infrastructure for outfitting cavalry.

So, as a previous poster mentioned, it may have been used at the time of the Civil War, but it is not a military issued piece. It's similar to the "flower buttons" found in Civil War areas. The finder typically claims "Confederate button" - which is a possibility - but it can't be proven.
