Got up this morning to find frost out on the property. A bone chilling 28 degrees. Brrr..

I got a GREAT signal about 4 inches down. Went to digging and this popped out. At first, I could have SWORE this was a Seated Liberty coin. After a little more cleaning, found that I had a LARGE PENNY from Great Britain, I suppose.

1929 Though. Not too bad I guess.

Anyone know anything about these?

Ian

What you've got there is a rather nice British One Pence, or penny, coin from the reign of King George V (r. 1910-1936). He was the first king of the House of Windsor, creating that house during WWI to separate him and his line from the House of Saxe-Coberg-Gotha.

On the reverse is an effigy of the king, with the words GEORGIVS V DEI GRA:BRITT:OMN:REX FID:DEF:IND:IMP: surround him. This translates to "George V, by grace of God, King of all the British Territories, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India:.

The obverse has an image of Britannia, seated on a rock by the sea, wielding a trident and a shield emblazoned with the three crosses of the United Kingdom.

Your coin is 95.5% copper, 3% tin, and 1.5% zinc.

Nice find, those English pennies are huge! HH, Mike

Cool find. The local coin shop has a big bucket of world coins - any coin for 15 cents. Lots of your type of coin in there. Even a couple 1800's ones. I have a couple nice ones in my collection.

I know the feeling. The same thing happened to me last spring.Heart just a poundin' thinking I had a Large Cent and it turned out to be a 1908 British Half Penny.Bummer! Better luck next time. HH!

Nice coin mate, I've got an 1880 with Queen Victoria on it.
Big bugger of a coin.

yup! I found one (1929 also) down the street from my house in Mount Pleasant, SC. Don't have the foggiest clue how it got there. Seems like the British invasion lasted a bit longer than we were told. Ha Nice find though, I ran home and called my wife! ;D ;D
