Hello, Glass people!

I don't want to get crazy on cross-posting, but I just bought a little brown jug for the purpose of eBaying. You guys are the bottle experts, can you help me with this one? I posted the pics at the "What's it Worth?" board. Personally, I like this bottle. I just like money more.

Thanks!

That is a Flask.. I think you SHOULD NOT put on ebay.. There will be a huge bottle show in Baltimore 3 sundays from today. March 6th.. You will be able to take it to a bottle apprasier for free an then sell it to one of those venders that is set up there an get your money right then an there without all the ebay hassle an money dipping ebay does..... This type of bottle is out of my range but I would guessimate that is anywhere between 90-150 + dollars.. Assuming it has no chips or cracks

That must be the timeliest tip I ever got at Tnet. Imagine that, the biggest one-day bottle show in the world, 3 weeks and 10 miles from home. It looks like it would be worth the visit just for the education.
BTW- no chips or cracks, but worn on the bottom and one shoulder is somewhat abraded.

Yes, scratched. It's not very deep, but it looks like something went back and forth on it several times tho. I tried to get a picture of them, but it its hard to see if you can't tilt the bottle back and forth. If you're not focusing right on them its more of a dull spot.

I wouldn't worry to much about that.. btw I should be at the bottle show...

I think that SWR identified it correctly on the other forum: it's a handled flatttened chestnut bottle. These are usually thought of as American whiskey flasks from the 1850s. You got a good deal on this one, but I think eBay is your best choice for selling it. I'd be surprised if a dealer at the bottle show would give you a retail value. If you get offers at the show, my guess is that they'll cluster between $25 and $40. But, I'd be pleased to hear about your experience with this bottle at the show.

Here are some others for comparison:

Most of the Venders at the Baltimore show are collectors.. Not retail Venders... I seen alot of dealing going on there last years an they paid close to retail for bottles.. I seen one Vender pay way over bottle value cause the guy did his research an had the whole bio of the bottle on the company header paper. Like I said be4 take it to the show .. If you don't like the offers then put on ebay.. I wouldn't take anything less then 75-105.00 at the show

I think I will take it to the show to be appraised. I don't have to sell it there but I'll see what's offered.

Two chestnut flasks in green with no handle sold on eBay for over $300 on Jan 31. A darker one sold for $280 in February. The funny thing is all three of the auctions ended within 5 minutes of 6:15 pm PST. No other auctions of similar bottles broke $100, including some that couldn't get a $25 bid. That could have been in part because of the crappy pictures though.

You want to look for prices for your color of bottle only.. Color plays a big factor in value of the bottle... I would think your color would be light amber or honey amber... The ones that couldn't sell for 25.00 on ebay (even tho I haven't seen them) are probly repro bottles. I personally think you'll get a good enough offer at the show you won't be leaving with it.. Just go around the whole room first to see who sells them then making your way back around to all the tables that had them to see who will give you the most..

I was so excited about your find ..I totally over looked a huge factor in pricing... Does you bottle have any embossing (writing in the glass) at all? anywhere on the bottle? after I stopped an actually looked at the bottle ..I am assuming it doesn't.. If that is the case then the bottle more then likely be alot less then I orginally thought...
