When Sweet arrow lake was drained in '99
I saw men, women & Children walk & Run out into the Mud to reach the creek in the middle that fed the Lake.
Only to drop straight down in the Mud.
The mud the Constituency of heavy duty wheel bearing grease
would Suck your Shoes Fast to the bottom.
the worst thing you could do was stand still.
I wore Ankle High shoes Tied Tight, so they wouldn't pull off, & To free my Feet from the bottom Lean forward to pop the heels free first.
then walk fast, like pushing through 2 feet of heavy snow.
when I got a Signal I would Drop to my Knees , and in most cases just Push my Hand into the Mud till I reached the object.
on occasion I would lay on my side and reach in with my entire arm.
spent the whole first year as it was slowly drained looking like that guy from sun up to sundown

I really miss those days

there was a crew of 3 guys would push a canoe through the mud. and use poles to find snapping turtles too.
they would reach in and pull them out the mud. put them in the canoe till they got back to shore.

I crossed a 6' sand bottom stream to find it was silt below
down I went, 1/2 hour and lost my boots

When I was younger I was in woods and came onto a skinny stream... just wide enough where it would require one shoe to get wet...

So one step in middle and the next onto the other side... no biggy right ? ... WRONG !

I had all my gear in hand and took that step... and instantly was to my chin... arms up with all my crap in the air.

Felt crap tickling my bare legs.. (was roots I hoped) throwing my gear I came out like a rocket... as fast as I went in I was back out... BLACK from chin down.

Cigarettes everything in pockets... wallet... etc... drowned. (pre beeper let alone cell days)... but gear was saved

Laugh if ya want...

My buddy behind me was practically rolling on the ground.

PS... the water was so murky just about 6 inches down it gave the look of a "false bottom".

Oh... I don't call some mud "mud"... I call it muck.

When I got the Go Pro...($500 investment I have used maybe 5 times and collected dust) I did a short vid of me testing a backup X2 that was in "mid tweek mode".

Never posted a vid here... not even sure how to do it.

The point is... I named it... "mucky muck dig".

It was Florida SALT muck (mud)... let me tell ya... get sucked in it and you will know what getting stuck is all about. heh

I pulled my boat up to a mud flat one January and saw some flint had washed out. Jumped off the nose of the boat and was waist deep in red mud. They started generating power and releasing water at the dam and the flat was going under water. That actually helped me. Temp was about 26 degrees. I remembered reading about going flat when in mud to crawl out. I did and then put logs across it dug out my rubber boots,lol. Hunted a few more hours. It was a successful day.
I do not blame that guy for giving it a try. You just need a back up plan like a hunting partner and a cell phone.

Lot of people thought it was me - that spot is like 15 min. from me -
i dont watch local news - so was late when i heard they drained it - my GF knew they were going to drain - but did not think i wouldve been intersted
i was po'ed when i heard about it and she told me "oh...yeah...i knew that already"
guy really killed it - lots of good coins relics and jewelry from guys that reported it - many made finds no one know about

That's the lake where I've been getting all my good finds lately, they just drained it a month ago so the ground feels solid but you can puncture right through the crust and sink up to your neck. There's been so many metal detectorists I'm surprised that more people haven't gotten stuck.
