Although the title suggests it's a large Saxon Site, it's really our largest spread of Roman material & a much smaller spread of mostly middle Saxon finds. We are building evidence of an unusual length of activity, starting in the 1st AD & ending somewhere in the 8th C AD. There is also a small amount of Medieval & later but that relates to farming & not settlement.
We settled into our usual pattern of gridding & with the Deus on Program 3 I was far more familar with what it was telling me. (thanks Rob) The sounds were a little more like the XP GMP. I dig a lot anyway, but as soon as I understand it's capabilities I will think about customising, but for the next 6 months at least, I will learn the factory settings.
The ground was still very wet & sticky & our 3 hour window was enough.
As we started at the far field edge where the finds were slightly thinner, we were not expecting much. But on my first run I got a nice Saxon Strapend.:icon_thumright:

Saxon pinhead
Romano-Celtic Toggle (bust but a type I haven't seen, once circular)
12 Roman Coins - 1 holed in the Saxon period for jewelry
17th C Token
Bits....

We are hoping the Deus will weed out another Sceat from this site, fingers crossed.

I'm always jealous of Abe and the Pennsylvania and New York guys for the history in their areas. Then I read your posts and my perspective completely changes. Although you probably won't find a Peace dollar in your hunts, I am pretty darn sure I won't find a holed Roman coin anywhere here in western NC. I am glad though that a nice guy such as yourself gets to have all that fun over there.

Nice finds Cru. What do you do with all the stuff you find? You must have a warehouse if you keep it.

Great finds. I couldn't even imagine coming across a site that had finds such as yours. Congrats.

Not sure if you have seen the pilot series of 'Detectorist' BBC5, very funny. To quote them, I'm a 'Collections Collector, I Collect Collections'........

Simply, I keep most of it, share some with owners, & sell the very few rare bits I can't afford to keep. (ie. can't afford to pay the owners 50%)

Great looking Strapend! I'd be over the moon finding one of those Crisp Roman Bronzes that seem to be quite common occurrence from hunting abilities. The only Roman that i seem to get that has any detail is silvers, the bronzes are burnt to a point of no detail left. Your arm must be loving the weight load of the new Dues.

Another awesome hunt. Just couldn't imagine the thrill of digging such a site. Congrats

Looks like a great site Cru! Strapend and Pin are very nice pieces, like the double holed roman+soil seems to be kind on roman coins. Good to scrap ratio looks better than usual! :icon_thumleft:

Yes, the weight or lack of it is one of the most important things for me. Much heavier machines would mean the end of my detecting by now.

You spotted it - this field has a much higher scrappy -identifiable ratio. But for such a large site is also has the lowest Bronze - Silver Ratio. Only 3 ever, so fingers crossed for at least 1.

I wish you luck, with an early site there is a chance for a high grade Denarius!

There isn't much activity/items from the 1-2nd, & the other silvers were 3-4th, so that would be a long shot, but not impossible.
