There are different kinds of coils.. Google concentric vs DD coils for an explanation. Then check your machine to see what kind you've got. Regardless though, you need to practice with a few targets to know where the target is likely to be in relationship to where it sounds like it is.

Best way to learn your pinpointing is to toss a coin and find it and if your detector has a proportional sound in the pinpoint than do it with your eyes closed and then open them to see where is the coin in respect of the coil.
