Are there any holes in the tube? If yes then I think it is part of an old gas valve.

Honestly don't know what it is and was too afraid to suggest it might be a stopper/plug on that account. Glad to see you seeing the same sees. Googled for a while, found a couple brass stoppers in this rough shape/form but nothing that jumped out.
