This item was mounted as a guard at the tip of a dagger sheath. (I hope I use the right terms)

I gave up and looked it up on www.dictionary.com .

Here's what they had to say:

"A metal tip or mounting on a scabbard or sheath."

So, I guess it's more or less the tip end, but apparently can include a good part of the sheath -

You can kinda see on the picture where it gets skinnier for the point.

Pretty cool!
