April 25, 1945 near the town of Torgau on the Elbe army 1 st Ukrainian Front, met with troops of the 1 st U.S. Army. As a result of the meeting of the allied forces remnants of the armed forces of Germany were divided into two parts - north and south.
The first meeting took place, when an American patrol under the command of First Lieutenant Albert Kotzebue crossed the Elbe. On the eastern shore they met Soviet troops under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Gardieva. On the same day another American patrol (under the command of Second Lieutenant U.S. Army, William Robertson), met with Soviet soldiers, Lieutenant Alexander Silvashko on the destroyed bridge over the Elbe near Torgau.
