I used to own a '64 mercury comet caliente. That does look like the emblems it had on it, but mine never had any that big! On the hood was a little fin, no ornament and all the other mercury ornaments looked like that but smaller. Hope this helps HH omnicognic 8)

it might be some kind of a promotional piece for the Lincon-Mercury line of cars. It looks just like the Mercury man that is on the 62 Mercury Meteor. I have a 1960 Mercury Comet Stationwagon, but there is no Mercury Man on it anywhere. So im guessing as big as yours is, it must be a advertising tool or something. maybe off a car dealership building or something. Its a long shot, but a pretty good guess I think. Brad

2" sounds like the size of the hood ornaments on the early-mid 50s Mercs. They were attached with a spring-loaded cable from that knob you see on the bottom, which fit into a socket on the base attached to the hood.
