Haven't heard of them used for carpet, but they are real common for thread count on linens. The base usually has a scale around it so you don't have to count every single thread. You can find them around for like ten bucks with a little leather case. BTW- They're excellent for coins, rocks & gems & maps if you have shakey fat fingers like some of us.That is the kind of glass used to count threads in carpets.
