✅ SOLVED metal piece with clear glass

I found this in a field which dates to the early 1700's. At first it looked like a belt buckle but has a clear round piece of glass inside metal. It was hinged together. Also included was another wire piece (2 1/2 inches long) found at the same site. Thanks in advance.

Could be an old magnifying glass
Don't think it from the 1700s.
Most likely late 1800s, early 1900s

The second piece looks to be a handle off a vintage iron. used for ironing clothes and was heated on the cook stove top. It could also be a vintage T pot handle.

gunsil got it right. It's a folding linen tester. Not only used in the fabric business but also common in the printing industry.

Yours is a singlet. Doublet and triplet lenses are more expensive. Probably manufactured no earlier than 1950's.

Haven't heard of them used for carpet, but they are real common for thread count on linens. The base usually has a scale around it so you don't have to count every single thread. You can find them around for like ten bucks with a little leather case. BTW- They're excellent for coins, rocks & gems & maps if you have shakey fat fingers like some of us.
