Mexican beach find - Medallion - old or new?

My neighbor´s friend just returned to the US with what she thought was a small dirty coin, found at the beach. She cleaned it up and discovered that it is not a regular coin. I told her that I would take pictures and post them to see whether anyone can identify the object. My "guess" is that it may be some sort of medallion. But, in this part of the world, cheap religious medallions are quite common. So, I am trying to figure out - from photos - whether this is a medallion, or a coin? And, whether it is a new cheap medallion, or whether it is something old. Any guesses would be appreciated. Thanks.

No, my neighbor's friend sent the photos back from Colorado. She cleaned it up last night, and realized that it was not a coin. Also, the front and back look very similar.
